  • Biography

Ella Butler is a research fellow in the School of Sociology at ANU. She is currently working with Mary Lou Rasmussen, Celia Roberts and Helen Keane on the ARC Discovery Project Experimenting with Estrogen. Broadly, her research engages theories of the body, sensory knowledge, science and technology studies (STS) and the cultural politics of commodities. She explores these interests through ethnographic research on the production and consumption of food and pharmaceuticals. Her work has examined how taste is made into an object of knowledge in the US food industry. Most recently, she is pursuing questions around imaginaries of hormonal bodies. She received her PhD from the University of Chicago, and that research was supported with grants from the Wenner-Gren Foundation, the US National Science Foundation, and the Chemical Heritage Foundation.
